Guard the Good Deposit (Overcoming Fear)

By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you. 2 Timothy 1:14

I think many artists are motivated by fear. The sensitivity that gives us the ability to be creative, also leads us to be prone to seek the approval of man. The fear of failure and not measuring up can lead us to a type of passive paralysis. This paralysis can be sneaky though, because often we mask this passivity by wearing a mask of busyness; by choosing to only operate in capacities we are comfortable with.

If you are like me, it is all motivated by fear; fear that I am trying too hard, fear of rocking the boat, fear that my efforts won’t be appreciated, fear that no one will like the results.

Believing that God is who he says he is, and that he will accomplish what he says he will accomplish, frees us to pursue big things for big causes to the glory of Jesus. –The Resurgence

When we realize the Holy Spirit “dwells within us” how foolish is it to fear?

When we realize that God has “entrusted to you” a “good deposit” how foolish is it to remain passive?

I often wonder what God must think when we pray that he might work in areas that  he has entrusted to us.  How easy is it to forget that Jesus came and died to sanctify us, and to make a way for the Spirit to dwell within us?

Instead, we should pray that the spirit would stir within us; giving us the wisdom and the strength to BE the work of God in the things he has entrusted to us.

The Big Idea

Our fear motivates us to put on a mask of false righteous that limits us to doing only what we can do in our own power. If we put fear aside and walk in humility, we can run in the confidence of the ability of God. It is only in His power that we have any chance to guard the things God has entrusted to us.

Don’t spend your time worrying about the things you can’t control. Instead, steward the time, resources, and influence God has entrusted to you with for the work of his mission.

Dream big, work hard, and guard your heart.
